Crown and bridge work

Crowns and bridges are dental restorations used to replace missing teeth. Crowns are a great option for teeth that are cracked, badly chipped or damaged. They can also improve the aesthetics of your smile by making your teeth appear straighter. Do you want to transform your smile with crowns and bridges? Make an appointment at Prodental Clinics to find out if crown and bridge work is a viable option to meet your needs.

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are both fixed prosthetics that are cemented onto existing teeth or implants. We use crowns to cover and protect damaged teeth. Bridges are false teeth held in place by the abutment teeth on either side of the gap.

Do I need a crown?

You may benefit from a crown if you have:

  • A tooth that is damaged or fractured
  • Decay that has weakened a tooth
  • An oddly shaped tooth
  • A dental bridge that needs an anchor
  • A tooth that is severely discoloured

Do I need a bridge?

You may benefit from bridges if you have a missing tooth or teeth that need to be replaced. It's also a suitable option for patients who find dentures too uncomfortable or unstable.

Procedure for inserting crowns and bridges

Inserting crowns and bridges usually require two trips to the dentist. During the first visit, the surrounding teeth are numbed with a local anaesthetic. Next, we prepare the surrounding teeth by cleaning any decay or plaque that remains and reducing them so that the crown can be fitted. After this, we make a mould of the teeth and send it off to a dental lab where the custom impression is made. The custom mould takes one to two weeks to return to the office. In the meantime, you will be fitted with temporary crowns and/or bridges. When you return to the dental office, we will remove the temporary crown or bridge and replace it with the permanent one. Lastly, we adjust the crown or bridge for the proper bite and fit, and the restoration is permanently bonded into the mouth.
